Many people still shy away from oils for fear that “oil will create more oil” in acneic skin types or perhaps feel too heavy or greasy even if your skin is dry. These are just two common myths about face oils we hear often, but that’s all they are; myths.
Unlike regular moisturisers, which are water-based and often packed with synthetic fillers and preservatives, natural, organic oils are rich in antioxidants that will truly feed your skin with the nourishment it needs to age beautifully and your skin will glow with health and radiance. The molecules in an oil are also smaller than those in a water-based moisturiser, meaning they will penetrate deep into the dermis where they will target your specific skincare concerns.
Not all oils are created equal
Not all oils are created equal, however, and we pride ourselves on this fact at Luna Oils by creating our face oils based on the ancient wisdom of Ayurvedic principles. Ayurveda forces you to look deeper than the surface and realize that inner and outer health are inextricably linked.
In order to figure out your skin type and what will work best for you, you need to figure out your dosha; one of the three energies present in the makeup of each individual.
Vata – Dry/Dehydrated
Vata personalities embody the element of space and air, and like air, they move quickly and are often creative and energetic. However, they can sometimes feel ungrounded and have a tendency to worry excessively.
This dosha type is the most at risk for the early signs of aging due to their dry skin that has a tendency to dehydrate. Less sebum in this skin type means winter may be especially frustrating in terms of dealing with dry, flaky skin
The Oil You Need
The perfect type of oil for this skin type is one that will calm and add hydration at the same time. Our Vata Face Oil contains slow absorbing oils like avocado and Tamanu, which will provide rich concentrations of fatty acids to help the skin retain moisture and regain elasticity.
Kapha – Oily
Kaphas are the most grounded and reliable of the three doshas, because they embody the element of earth. But because Kaphas are so stable and grounded they are often stubborn and resistant to change.
Kaphas struggle with excess sebum, large pores and resilient skin that ages slower than the other doshas due to more oil in the skin. Painful, cystic acne is common in this skin type, however, as well as a loss of elasticity.
The Oil You Need
A fast absorbing oil, as well as an oil that will help to provide cleansing properties and clean out the pores is recommended. Our Kapha Face Oil is ideal as it contains astringent oils including frankincense, tea tree and safflower which help to cleanse and tighten pores, therefore reducing excess oil production in the future. Other soothing and antioxidant rich ingredients such as argan oil and vitamin E will soothe inflammation and reduce the incidence of scarring.
Pitta – Combination/Sensitive
The element of fire governs this dosha and results in a blazing personality of high energy with a tendency towards hot tempers and irritability.
While combination skin is common with Pittas, their fire element manifests as an inflamed complexion that is red and sensitive and they are no stranger to inflammatory conditions such as rosacea and eczema.
The Oil You Need
The name of the game when it comes to Pittas are soothing ingredients that will calm and balance the skin. Our Pitta Face Oil contains anti-inflammatory and soothing Jojoba and coconut, as well as cooling jasmine and sandalwood to nourish and restore balance.
